Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start getting my dog professionally groomed?

As soon as your puppy is fully vaccinated, they can start visiting the groomers - usually within the first three months. Although they may not look like they need to go to a groomer this early, there are a whole lot of different noises, handling, and procedures in a grooming salon they will not be accustomed to yet.

Is my pet too old to be groomed?

We would usually recommend for older dogs to come to the groomers more regularly, so they are being groomed for a shorter amount of time. Longer times between grooms usually means more work when they come into the groomers and it can be more stressful for an elderly dog. We always make sure to take extra special care of older pets giving lots of rests.

How often should I have my dog groomed?

It depends on the breed of dog, type/length of coat, how often they are brushed at home, their lifestyle and of course, your personal preferences. We recommend between 3 to 6 weeks for maintaining their coat.

What can you do if my dog’s coat is knotty/matted?

If the hair is knotted or develops matts, it is unhealthy for the dog’s skin. If possible, we will carefully de-mat your pet’s coat, if it can be done without causing pain to the dog. This process is often painful or can cause irritation to the dog’s skin. Our policy is to limit de-matting to a maximum of 15 minutes. If the coat is severely matted or we determine that de-matting would be in-humane for your pet, we will need to remove the coat with clippers.

Should I get my double coated dog shaved?

We advise against shaving double coated dogs. Shaving a double coated dog doesn’t reduce the amount of shedding, it only reduces the length of the hairs shed. It can interfere with their natural ability to thermoregulate and stay cool and there is no guarantee that the coat will return to its original condition after it has been shaved. This can cause a patchy look and more matting
There are situations, such as medical conditions or elderly pets, where the benefit outweighs the risk. The best way to keep your double coated dog cool and reduce their shedding, is to book them in for regular de-shedding treatments.

How much will it cost?

The cost will depend on a variety of factors, so we will often give you a range or approximate cost. The condition of the dog's coat (e.g. if it is matted), the type/length of coat, if clipping is required, how much time is required for the groom, and the dog's temperament are all factors in determining the price. We will happily discuss the cost with you at the time of making your booking and try to give you the most accurate estimate.

How is my dog dried?

We hand dry dogs with a variable speed, high velocity dryer. This allows us to blow out most of the loose hair, as well as gives us a chance to have a good look at your dog’s skin to assess any potential health issues. If your dog is elderly or does not tolerate this method, we will use a warm circulating dryer to dry their coat.

How often do nails need trimming?

Generally, most dogs’ nails need trimming every 3 - 6 weeks. We offer a complimentary nail trim between regular grooming if your dogs' nails are too long.

Will my dog be muzzled?

If a dog shows signs of aggression, we will put a muzzle on them, for both their own safety and ours, to prevent accident and injury and to help calm the dog.

Will my dog be sedated?

Absolutely not. We do not use any form of sedation. If your dog requires sedation, we recommend you speak to your vet.

Can I bring my own shampoo?

Absolutely, although all products that we use are designed to promote a healthy coat and skin. If your vet has prescribed or suggested an alternate shampoo rather than what we use, we will gladly use it.

Can you express my dog’s anal glands?

No. We do not offer this service. We recommend seeing your vet to determine the cause and work with them to manage the problem.

What if I want something changed or redone after my dog is finished?

Your satisfaction is very important to us! If you notice something at pick up, please let us know so we take care of it for you prior to leaving.

If you have any more questions or would like to specifically discuss the grooming needs of your pet, please don’t hesitate to call us on 0408 332 202.
